A Heavy Load

Day 16 of the Soul Card Journey
with Elizabeth Crawford at Soul's Music
Soul Cards by Deborah Koff-Chapin at http://www.touchdrawing.com/

Sometimes the load
Traveler carries
reaches as high
as her head,
the path
pitches
steeply
before her;
her strength
falters,
and the worm
of doubt
creeps in:
"there is no way
I can
possibly
go on."

At those times,
Traveler
needs  to
stop a while
beside
a rippling stream,
listen to  water
trickling over
rocks,
raise her vision
beyond the journey
and the heavy load
to the horizon,
where eagles
soar the heavens,
where the vastness
of the sky
erases all
but glory
from her
mind;
to allow the
 sighing trees
to breathe into her
their deep peacefulness,
and renew her
strength.

After a time,
she then
is able to
lift her load
and resume
the path,
knowing it is
leading her
exactly where
she is
meant to go,
knowing
there will be
rest and ease
at the end
of this next
hard
segment
of the trail.

  1. One of those days, yes? Hard to move on when the starter won't start. You capture it well with your words.

  4. So true. Sometimes just making it through another day is a triumph. If you're going thru hell, keep going!

  5. It's all about the journey. But remembering to stop and rest, to breathe, to celebrate how far one has come... this poem reminds me of all that and more. I loved it, Sherry. Thanks, Amy

  6. That worm of doubt is insidious, indeed, Sherry! I love your advice "to allow the sighing trees to breathe into her their deep peacefulness"....I often need to remind myself of that...:)

  7. oh yes - i surely know this tiredness on a journey - on life's journey... sometimes it's good to pause and breathe a bit and listen to the elements around us... refreshing strength... and move on with new courage and power...

  8. Raising the eye line will also raise Zen. Reads like a mantra, speaks with great wisdom

  9. Beautiful Sherry… "to allow the
    sighing trees
    to breathe into her
    their deep peacefulness,
    and renew her
strength." this is a comfort for me too as I journey through life.

  10. Listen to the streams -- only by staying put and listen can we get through those times of self-doubt.

  11. oh i would agree...to stop and take in the world and nature a bit...its endless rhythm....perhaps we borrow a bit of its strength when we are ready to move on....

  18. I love it Sherry ~ To take a rest, breathe in & pause and then resume again ~ Perhaps we need to take a lessons from nature, to pause & reflect before always running off in different directions ~

  19. "...raise her vision
    beyond the journey..."
Yes, ma'am, yes. Like filling up the tank of a car, but connecting to everything is the real fuel!

  22. There are certainly days that feel like this. However, what I like here is the contrasting imagery of the water finding its own natural way. There are certainly many paths on every mountain.
