Watermelon Moon

The soundless night
huddles under
its blanket
of darkening clouds
faintly rose etched
by fingers of fading sunset.
Settling,
it pulls its mantle of repose
tenderly
across the sleeping city

and a slice of moon
portal of mystery
recipient of dreams
sweet prompter of desire
inspirer of songs,
hangs over hills
bunched like a lumpy giant,
a slice of watermelon
swinging softly
in a pomegranate
sky

  1. Beautiful poem, Sherry..is this new? I love, 'pulls its mantle of repose tenderly across the sleeping city'. Such an evocative image, and a stunning photograph to illustrate it...just charming!

  3. This isnt a new poem, sadly. I dont write anything this inspired these days. I just came across it and decided to post it today as I like the words. The photo is actually DAWN over the inlet in Tofino, isnt it amazing? But the color was right for this poem........I wrote it when I lived in town. My heart was stirred by Romance in those days, which I seem to need for inspiration. Without it, I write depressing poems about the environment:) So glad you like it.

  4. Ah yes, I can picture this watermelon moon in a pomegranate sky.

You said in a comment that you don't write anything this inspired these days. I hope you will try, as you do have talent. Inspiration is everywhere.

  9. Never fear, I AM writing these days, but the flow just isnt as inspired as it was. However, one thing I do know is, the more I keep writing, the oilier the machinery will get and the flow may return. In fact, I just looked at the moon and a poem began itself..........I must go follow where it leads!
