Wild Woman on Flying

[First Day of Flying by Shelly S. Cannady
-from Google]

Wild Woman
knows more
than any
mother
wants to
ever
have to
learn,
about watching
her child
teeter
on the edge
of the
precipice,
fearful
that the
slightest breeze
will topple
him off.

But she also
has experienced
more joy
and pride
than any
mother
could ever
have
imagined,
at watching
her fledgling
step courageously
to the edge,
spread his wings-
and fly!!

  1. Awwww I am always so fearful for the chicklets as they try their first attempts to fly. Seen a few in my day try too soon and fall splat to the ground without a nice outcome so, I love it when they do take off and they make it!
    Love this~!

  2. Oh, perfect, Sherry! Mothers everywhere can be stuck in that uneasy place where fear for their young fights with pride in their acheivements. Speaking personally, letting go is not always easy to do...:)

  3. I don't always comment, but your Wild Woman pieces are my favorites. This one really hit home. Every mother has lived this. As you know, the precipice was terrifyingly high for one of my fledglings.. The first stanza captured the fear so well.

  4. Sherry, my kind of poem. Having seen my girl at both the precipice and flying skyward (in a good way!), this resonates. I love Wild Woman poems! Amy

  6. In the afternoon yesterday, a mother quail got separated from her tiny chicks, and they were screaming for their mother. They were very cute. I hope all was reconciled.
