Wake Up Call

November rain
was lashing
the windshield
as I headed
down the highway.

The wipers
click click clicked
and Caroline Myss spoke
from the tape deck.

Rounding
a corner,
I felt the car
suddenly
take flight.

In slow motion,
time suspended
and myself
simply waiting
for the inevitable,
the car slid
across the highway
and
-slam!
slam!
slammed!-
three times
into the
concrete abutment.
Horrible pain,
then it
finally
came to rest.

Not four seconds
later,
a semi
toiled up
the hill.
Four seconds later,
I would have
been squished like a bug
on his front grill.

In gratitude
at still
being alive,
yet with a
sudden chill,
I remembered
the last words
I heard Caroline say,
just before
my car lifted off:

"Wake Up call."

  3. The absolute wonder of synchronicity never fails to amaze me and boggle the mind. Glad you survived, even better that you chose to carve that experience into words.

  5. Every day, every hour should be the wake up call. There is so little time left. We are here, we are here now. Whatever it takes, wake up! Wake up! Make those minutes count. Hope this was just a writing, and you are well.

  6. Wow...yet another reminder that our lives are brief and ephemeral! Seize the day...each and every one is achingly, fleetingly beautiful...:)
