She, and the Song of the Sea

One of Pup's cousins on a Tofino beach

Wild Woman lives with the song of the sea in her veins, and the heart  of a wolf in her chest: a tired old mother wolf who has seen many seasons, and whose strength is wearing out. But she remembers the pulse of the wild; her blood quickens at sunrise on the coast, as she watches the indefatigable sun rise, morning after morning, the eternal waves ebbing and flowing, on the shore and within her being, through the everness of time, in the only place where her soul is at home. She carries this with her inland, in her waning years, yet every cell of her being is attuned up and over the mountains, where the seaspray, the ancient forest, the eagle's cry, the ley lines in this power place, call to her forever, singing: Come home, come home, so spirit and being can be one, before you lay your body down for the last time.

This place claimed her, long before she claimed it.
It has called to her for lifetimes.
It is forever and forever singing her home.

An attempt at a haibun (with syllable count gone wild), on the topic of Identity for Sumana at Poet's United's Midweek Motif.

  3. A wonderful write....reminds me of Barbara Kingsolver's High Tide in Tucson....and the story of the hermit crab she brought home from Florida to her son.

  8. I like the experiment with this form Sherry - it has a feeling of folklore..also love the notion that home finds us..not vive versa - that can offer hope in waning days xo

  13. The song of the sea, the howl of the wolf are inside you Sherry. They are you. I like how you identify yourself here, how you show your heart.

  14. Sherry, I must admit, until today, I have never seen or read a haibun. Not surprising, given how poetry was taught to me, during the 1980s, by the Ontario education curriculum. Please pardon my ignorance, but I love the flow of your words. Thank you, for enlightening, with your poem.

  17. Those places from an unknown past speak to us to tell us who we are, who we were and will be forever more. It is call from the wild that you known and will always have a home. How beautifully you have conveyed your feelings here Sherry.

  18. Of your many expressions of love for the wolf Pup and the love of the shore and woods, this is the most beautiful! The contrast between the strength wearing out and the "indefatigable sun rise, morning after morning, the eternal waves ebbing and flowing, on the shore and within her being, through the everness of time" is profound! There is that which will never grow old--like being claimed before claiming, like belonging and knowing it. Wow!

  19. The calling is a song that whispers in you heart until the day you find that place of peace. Sending positive intentions that the door will be open soon.

  23. Sherry,
You have so many attachments to the earth, sea and nature, that your identity is multi-faceted. You are such an interesting lady with a great soul and a big heart. At least when I visit Tofino, I can identify you to anyone Sherry!!
Loved the image of Pup's cousin..

  25. A poem in prose, Sherry, that reads like an archetypal, matriarchal folk tale. This had me fascinated and enthralled!
