Poor Man's Orchid

Sweet sixteen, big blue eyes,
heart aflutter,
she stands under a cherry tree
extravagant with pink blossoms,
the evening filled with a scent so sweet
she will remember it
fifty years later,
recall how he picked a small cluster,
presenting it to her with a flourish:
"Poor man's orchid" -
the most beautiful one
she ever received.

  7. Beautiful and evocative of the fragility of youth, as fleeting as that 'poor man's orchid,' but every bit as sweet.

  16. Some men have that touch of inspiration and do something so tender and beautiful as to win a woman's heart. I must try that next time round.
