follow a raven
and find a wolf
hear her gobble-cry,
his soft whuff
up on the ridge
where wild grasses grow
they tarry to listen
while the west wind blows
the wolf sings out
when the full moon beams
hear his howl
threading through your dreams
out on the desert
before the dawn
you can look for his tracks
but he'll be gone
at the end of the trail
near the Joshua Tree
a big black wolf
waits for only me

wow - amazing ... and I love how you've pulled in sound too - I was so stopped, by the use, right at the start, of "whuff" -
ReplyDeleteit's so hard to translate sounds into words, but damn, if this isn't spot on!
this is a great piece, it speaks of the hidden, shy and elusive nature of wolf and yet, how there are signs, to be spotted, for a brief time, until, they too disappear back into the wilds ...
Ah, I am sure that the black wolf waits for you, Sherry! He is out there somewhere...and he will find you! I love the photo AND the poem.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful forces of nature are the raven and the wolf! The poem is thrilling, and its conclusion perfect.

ReplyDeleteThis is a folktale like a miniature painting. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteLove this! An atmospheric rhyme and cadence sets the mood. And then there is the mesmeric intermingling of raven and wolf … wild grasses and west winds … moonbeams and dreams … Love the visuals … Love the sounds. A wonderful piece to linger over.
