Nine Swans Flying

I saw nine swans flying in the early morning dawn.
Nine. They mate for life, so one of them is gone.
One flies on alone, across the chilly winter sky.
One  left behind a song to be remembered by.

I saw nine swans in formation,
flying low through morning mist.
The hills so brown and bare await the sun's first kiss.
The leader, when he tires,
falls back and yields his place.
I stand and watch, holding my breath,
the cool wind on my face.

The deer are gentle in the fields,
the clouds are hanging low.
If I never see a swan again,
their beauty, now, I know.

Hi kids. This was in draft, and needs work, but am posting it now to test whether I have resolved Major Technical Glitches that have consumed my evening. It appears, by Divine Intervention of the Mozilla Firefox Browser, I have resolved my difficulties. Still, in matters technical, I have a very low trust threshold. It is quite a stretch for someone who was alive before TV was even invented!

  1. Awww I love swans. Yes, they do mate for life too. They are protected in the UK from being hurt and harmed but, that doesn't prevent it happening. I hate to think of anyone wishing to hurt them.
That must've been a wonderful sight to see. I've seen Canadian Geese flying in the V formation now many times, but, never a flock of swans. There are no swans here on the island. Strange eh!
Glad you got your computer hitches sorted out and pulled up now ;)
    Clever YOU!

  2. What a beautiful poem! I wish I could write such nice poetry. (I've tried, I'm pretty terrible.) Such gorgeous images you've brought to life. Thanks for sharing.

I'm a new follower, found your blog through a friend's. Nice to meet you!

  3. Beautiful poem, Sherry. I don't think I have ever seen a flock of swans. However, amazingly this morning when I looked overhead I saw (and heard) geese going north. I was amazed, as it does seem early! But maybe spring IS truly very near.

  4. Sherry, you're not that old! TV was invented long before you and I were born, but it wasn't available to the masses.
But we are old, I must admit, when it comes to technology. I kept up with "tech change" as my union called it, in the newspaper business for many, many years, but when I got sick at the end of the 80s, I didn't even try to keep up with computer technology. Change began to occur exponentially before the turn of the century, and there is nothing exponential about me except, perhaps, my weight.
I like your swan song. (Sorry, had to say that.) I had to look up swans on Wikipedia, because I realized I don't know much about them. There wasn't anything in the article about Vancouver Island, or even BC at all, but apparently there were swans in Idaho in the early Pleistocene.
    'Nuff said. LOL
