Turning their backs
on a White House
that does not hear them,
their silence
is more powerful
than a scream.
I stand in solidarity with students marching across the USA today, asking for something so simple it is heartbreaking that they have to ask: safety in their classrooms. In front of the White House, these students turned their backs on the government that does not hear them. Their silence was more eloquent than words. It is sad when students have to do the job we adults have failed to do over the years. But I am heartened that we have strong young leaders on the way up. There is hope.
for Sumana's prompt at Midweek Motif: Scream
This is so good!!!! The young people have nothing to lose...their scream is louder!
ReplyDeleteWow your poem is stuning. And what a title. BRAVO dear Sherry
ReplyDeleteMuch🌼love
A powerful poem! I'm with the students. Bravo for writing this.
ReplyDeleteVery true, Sherry. This kind of silence is more powerful than a scream.
ReplyDeleteSimple and powerful! Silence is powerful!
ReplyDeletesome times silence speaks volumes
ReplyDeleteThey will never forget this day, no matter what the outcome. Already, you help to make these protesting students into legends.
ReplyDeleteYou and I are on the same wavelength today my friend.
ReplyDeleteHow effective they are in their protest and how beautifully you have honoured and supprted them Sherry.
ReplyDeleteThe young have to bear the burden of a failed generation, the world over.. big big failures - hunger, safety, war...even in places where they cannot possibly protest. Sad world we leave behind for them.
ReplyDeleteAnd Sherry this is absolute Non-Violence against rage and gun lobby that strikes a chord with me...Long live students' protests everywhere for a just cause. A wonderful poem.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, silence more powerful than a scream!
ReplyDeleteLocally students spoke out and I was impressed by one young lady who said there is a movement among young new voters who will demand change in the coming years. Perhaps, we are on the cusp of a new awakening.
ReplyDeleteYou are the best, Sherry! I saw one high school join in while I was riding by. Those kids are our future.
ReplyDeleteAnd to think that there are some folks who say to these young people, "Shut up." As if they could!!!!
ReplyDelete'silence is a scream' and screams can be heard in silence' stifled in the throats, wrapped in overcoats, buttoned up in shirts and skirts blood sucked to the last drop still does not quench the thirst...kill me before I too scream a name...shame O what a shame'
ReplyDeleteGreat inspiring lines Dear Sherry ...
