Seeking Solace at Loon Lake

If there be loons here,
then, they are hiding,
perhaps in the tall fronds along the shore
where I walk no more
with you beside me.
Once we heard a beaver slap his tail
like cannon-shot,
the birds startling from the trees,
your ears perking up,
wolfish and knowing.

There will be no end to my tears,
so lonely is life without you.
Yet yesterday, I breathed in
a deep draught of dry, crackly leaves
and, in that moment,
was purely happy.

Life goes on.
We were two souls, traveling.
We are still two souls, traveling,
just on different planes,
and I cant find a loon anywhere,
for solace at Loon Lake.

  3. Me too. The image of pure happiness balanced the images of the lost loon and the forever missed dog.

  4. One has to take those moments of happiness as they come. But the sadness of missing is very palpable here, Sherry.

  10. Beautifully written Sherry... I can resonate strongly with these feelings... loved these lines:

    We were two souls, traveling.
We are still two souls, traveling,
    just on different planes,

    Lots of love,
    Sanaa

  11. The memory of your friend is the strong part in this, yet I know I've heard the loon so many times, but I have never seen it... a terrific call to tie into your poem.

  14. Lovely scene setting. I like how you just gave us little clues that your friend is a dog (and the picture!) - that added dimension to the relationship somehow, really put us into the scene with you.

  16. I wept as I read this. I had to have my SamCat put down this past Monday. So much regret and loss in this. This house is so empty now and the silence without his chirps and curls are are a lonely sound. Beautiful poem. Like Bjorn, I have heard the loons but never seen them. That in itself is a kind of longing. I am so sorry for your loss. I know it really hurts.

  17. Beautiful and sad. How apt that the loons be absent too!

  19. This so brought to mind, Schubert's Serenade, Sherry. That piece is my go-to place when memories of departed loved ones come to me and I feel the need for solace. For me, Franz Schubert's music is more consoling to human despair than any other. Schubert's Serenade, in particular ... so tender and soothing.

  20. You catch a truth I know about grief and life force. They are both wave forms, the one flowing back as the other ebbs.

  22. I know the ache of having a missing companion. I had to put down one of my kitties recently and it's truly heartbreaking. But the memories are something good to hold on to. We'll see them again, on that different plane. Hugs to you, Sherry.

  24. I often take walks seeking solace from time to time, and I too have wondered whether something would turn out for the better. But I've also come to realize that the ends justify the means, and it is okay to mourn for what has been lost. Life is so full of adventure and intrigue that sometimes these lost souls simply carry on.

  26. This feels like the loss of part your soul - and yet that fleeting and crisp moment of remembrance shines through and reminds us perhaps that special people and animals are always with us... xo

  29. Emptiness and subsequent loneliness can be most devastating. Canines somehow are missed more as they are man's best friend in every sense of the word.

  33. Adi, my beagle dog, and I loved to run into a group of loons or a heron on the bank watching for a fish to swim by. Whichever, her favorite activity was to chase them into the water. Like treeing a squirrel.
I miss her too, well written, it gives me a spell of sadness. And brings good memories. Thank you, Sherry.

  34. Sherry, this is so sad. I can echo every word here, remembering our walks, Adi and mine, and yes, even the loons and other bodies of wild life she liked to disturb. They weren't afraid of her, more like playing games.
What is so beautiful is that it fits with any set of people or other when one leaves.
