Bear at Stamp Falls.
I used to walk Pup and Jasmine here.

I could write an entire ode
to a bear's furry ears -
so cute, like the black and white teddy
I had as a child.

My friend hiked mountain trails.
I asked him: have you ever encountered
a bear on your hikes?
I asked him: have you ever encountered
a bear on your hikes?
He had. Around a corner,
he and Mr. Bear came face to face.
"Oo!" they both said,
staring at each other.
he and Mr. Bear came face to face.
"Oo!" they both said,
staring at each other.
"What did you do?" I asked, enthralled,
(for meeting a bear is not the least scary to me,
compared to humans, because bears
have evolved.)

He looked a little embarrassed,
but I was delighted (and just a little starry-eyed)
when he replied:
"I sang to the bear! I sang a little,
the bear moved sideways a little,
I went forward a little, I sang some more,
and bit by bit we moved past each other."

when he replied:

I only wish I had thought
to ask him
what song it was that he sang.
to ask him
what song it was that he sang.
for Shay's Word List. Once I saw a bear rock a compact car back and forth until its window popped out, and the bear climbed in. The owner, inside the nearby restaurant fine dining, enjoying the waves rolling in, must have left food in the car. I can only imagine when he came back out. How ever to explain to the car insurance company? And how to extricate the bear?
They do have super cute ears!
ReplyDeleteIt would have been interesting what the song was - but perhaps that was all part of the magic. Loved it.
ReplyDeleteI especially enjoyed this part. It made me chuckle in its truth!:

Bears are amazing creatures. As a young girl I was riding my bicycle and came face to face with a bear. He had swam across the river. I remember that moment just me and that big bear. He slowly sauntered away and I peddled home to tell my grandmother. She said the bear spirit travels with me now. I believed her and have had insightful dreams with the healing bear.
ReplyDeleteLoved your poem and I wonder about the song.
" . . . meeting a bear is not the least scary to me,
ReplyDeletecompared to humans, because bears
have evolved . . .
LOL! I like the tone of this poem, o light and airy rather than scary . . .
I love that story! Your friend must have had some kind of voice!
ReplyDeleteLOL. I would love to have known what the song was, Sherry! What an unexpectedly harmless, and charming encounter. I don't know what I would have done in taht situation (which I hope to never be in). "I could write an entire ode
ReplyDeleteto a bear's furry ears" -- They are adorable.
I adore this story Sherry and how he got passed the bear! The ending and thoughts are wonderful too! They do have cute ears don't they?
ReplyDeleteYay, Bear! I would love to hear the song.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to know the song too. Bears look cuddly, but I'll never find out. lol
