[Apathy, Denial and Hope, oh, my!]
A s events conflate, crisis upon crisis,
P opulations shut down, overwhelmed,
A very effective strategy for corrupt rulers,
T hat care only for power, profit and greed.
H ow can we awaken to our plight,
Y et stay strong enough to resist? We
D are not close our eyes & ears, or turn away,
E ven to preserve our own well-being.
N ow every vote and voice is needed.
I n the voting booth, in minds & hearts, let's
A ll join our voices, demanding
L eaders of integrity, ethics and compassion.
H ope is what keeps us moving forward,
O nto a kinder, and more caring path.
P eople of the earth, let's rise up, singing,
E xit this strange time, dream a better tomorrow.
Well, we can dream. For Earthweal, where the challenge is: Strange World. It has never been perfect. But neither has it ever been this strange, or felt this wrong. My last shred of hope is for the coming election. Just to have the nasty rhetoric stop would be SUCH A RELIEF. People not dying would be wonderful too. Stay safe, my friends.
The structure here definitely draws out the theme of madness--so much denial, so much apathy in the face of unbelievable corruption, yet still we hope. It's a strange, mad world indeed.
ReplyDeleteAs acrostic poems go, yours has taken me on a strange journey, Sherry, which reflects the strangeness of life as we currently know it. I worry about apathy and denial; I’m glad you included some hope. Some of the apathy comes from confusion and fear. But denial is the killer, especially when there are people who think the pandemic is a conspiracy. I went out on Saturday and again today – I even drove the car to an appointment – and it did look more hopeful.
ReplyDeleteAcrostics can be very clunky, but you make this smooth and natural. I like your hopeful ending.
ReplyDeleteYes, we have to keep hope. We have to hang on.
ReplyDeleteA clear march through a strange world. Certainty like this is so much needed. - Brendan
ReplyDeleteeloquent and evocative, Sherry ~
ReplyDeleteVery cleverly done, Sherry..."dream a better tomorrow" is the only way forward.

Ingenious. I will help to get out the vote, the first step in a longer strategy.
