You carry the world we have lost
in your antlers, gazing at us
as if to wonder how we ever
treated it so lightly.
Your forest is shrinking;
this brings you into the edges
of roads and towns
where you're not safe.
Your babies wobble fearfully
on concrete paths.
We once thought
that Forever
would forever
last.
for The Sunday Muse
If only man would listen to the message they long to share. This is utterly lovely Sherry, and a message that all humans need to hear. So glad you joined us at the Muse my friend!
ReplyDeleteSad and right on point. I especially like the middle stanza, Sherry.
ReplyDeleteI think this is the message you get when you look into the eyes of wild things...and perhaps into our own as well. Love those last lines with their sad wisdom.
ReplyDeleteYou always speak so eloqently for nature's creatures ... and for Mother Nature herself, Sherry. Bravo
ReplyDeleteSo sad, Sherry, this is for real. I guess our days to remember will be the good old days when forever was forever. Those humans and animals won't know those days, they live in the fast and disposable world. Perhaps we started the trend and let them suffer the consequences.?
ReplyDelete..
That last line is a compelling, scary truth...!!!
ReplyDeleteI love how you build and conclude in this poem - it makes it feel so complete and the message so well defined
ReplyDelete"We once thought
ReplyDeletethat Forever
would forever
last." - ah, well penned!
We certainly learnt that forever can take a detour
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday Sherry and thanks for dropping by my sumie Sunday today
Much💝love
Sherry, this was like an arrow. That fleeting image of all that should have been sacred and was treated as dross...lovely and fierce.
ReplyDeleteNow we know there is no forever!!
ReplyDeleteWeighty thoughts... And food for thought.. Thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteI feel this right to the center of my being. Forever has crashed into an ugly reality.
ReplyDeleteahhhh. forever is, I fear, a fantasy for our non-speaking cousins ~
ReplyDeleteAn arrow of a poem, right to my heart.
ReplyDeletePerfect! A true depiction of today

ReplyDeleteOne of your best in my humble opinion. It has left me very sad.
