Longing

My generation once thought
we would change the world.
Hope, peace and love were in the air.
Then assassins shot our leaders
and our peace ambassadors.
The world turned dark.
We almost turned the tide;
we missed the mark.

Seventy years in search of peace,
seventy years loving trees
and sky and sea,
as animals wild and tame
brought out the best in me.

What do I long for now,
as forests and koalas burn,
as polar bears die, just skin and bone,
without a solid place on which to stand?
That we will love our land,
fight for it, protect it,
heal it, help it thrive -
try to keep this ailing planet
- and all of us -
alive.

for Sumana's prompt at Midweek Motif: what do you long for?

  2. Thank you for mentioning our poor koalas. Our hearts are breaking for them. (Though some have been rescued and cared for.)

We need our governments to protect the land – in ways they have so far been too greedy and short-sighted to do .

    1. The koalas have been breaking hearts here, too, my friend. Just so terrible, to witness their suffering, and to imagine the hundreds, likely thousands, burning unseen. My heart has been heavy for days.

  3. The pain for the planet and its being is very evident , wish we human race become more sensible for the planet.

  5. I can't change the world, but maybe I can change one small acreage. If each of us can change a small part, then the whole will be better. Thank you Sherry.

  6. Sherry,

Where on this earth can we ever hope to find a caring solution to halt all of the earth's present problems. It seems to be a near irrelevance, to many in powerful positions of influence...I despair too!
The horror of the poor koalas, is beyond belief.
We are longing for the return of some world leaders, with hearts and a conscience too...

  7. Hope better sense prevails to make this planet live. Your words so deeply touch. I depend on the youthful generation, our 'proud-pied April'.

  8. It's a great connection, between the civil rights movement and the earth rights movement, both are aimed at overcoming toxic humanity to only marginal degree. Our dream may be futile, but longing keeps it amplified and loud and clear.

  9. Sherry, this is so honest and heart-breaking at the same time. I hope our planet flourishes.
