On Gentle Paws

The new dark is creeping in
On  gentle paws,
nibbling at the late afternoon light.

Soon lamps and crackling fires
will replace those  soft summer evenings,
full of children's voices.

I pile the pillows high,
set out the fleecy blankets,
stack up the books,
like nuts for a winter squirrel..

We are at the turning of the seasons
once again,
the new dark creeping in
on gentle paws.

For Susan's prompt at Midweek Motif ...Equinox.

  1. Oh yes--"stack up the books,
like nuts for a winter squirrel.. ."
When you put it like this, I wonder that it is not we who nibble so we can cuddle up again.

  5. I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for the new dark. I am sooooo tired of the dazzling desert sunshine! Bring on the dark!

  9. I like your metaphoric writing, Sherry. They are indeed gentle paws which usher in the new season.

  12. I love how this poem looks on us just as though we too have to hibernate in our own way to survive winter. I can remember that being the case so many years ago in Britain but it is not quite the same "Down under".

This is so wonderfully cosy and utterly s-s-s-igh-worthy. Beautifully drawn. I am there ... in my flannelette pajamas.

  20. Such a wonderful poem, Sherry. It reminds me of a treasured pet dog with gentle paws turning about itself as it settles down on a warm spot by the fire on an Autumn evening!
