Still With Me

As I'm walking,
my steps slowed now,
compared to what they were,
I remember your slow padding steps
beside me in the middle of the night,
when your body was failing
and you needed a midnight stroll
along the road, under the trees,
to make it through the night.

What people cant see,
as they pass,
is that when I walk,
you are still with me.
I carry you in my heart
and there is an invisible leash
hanging down
to where you still
 - and always will -
walk beside me.

I am following you.
Wait for me.
I am not far
behind you.

  8. I found it difficult even to talk to anyone when I lost my last dog, as part of my life had gone as well as we were such mates.

  16. Heartbreaking but beautiful. I still have the leash of my old big German sheaphard. He was so delightful and I still miss him too. It's nice that you feel him with you.

  17. Sherry,
I'm immediately drawn to think about your very dear Pup. I'm certain he is never far from your thoughts, or the love and the missing imparted in this wonderful tribute, to love..
    Happy Sunday and New Week,
    Eileen

  26. Although I never had a pet, but I can guess the intense attachment that can build up between the pet and the owner (rather, friend). This was beautifully penned!
