When Feeling Homeless, Read This Poem

 Matthew Brodeur image

Fellow Traveler,
do you feel like you've been
searching for home
for a lifetime?

Are you out there in the dark
storm-tossed and weary,
buffeted by winds,
with still such a long way
to go?

Come home.
I'll put a candle on the sill
to light your way.
There's a fire in the hearth
and a soup-pot slow-simmering.
Comfort and kind words await.
You need only arrive.

Come home, weary traveler,
to the only home
there ever is ~
home to yourself
once again.

A homecoming poem this Thanksgiving weekend in Canada, shared with The Sunday Muse.

  8. "Come home" is the call welcome to sooo many. We shouldn't hesitate to ask for the invitation, the hotelkeeper will enjoy it as much as the wanderer. When our oldest son got divorced (way back then) and his ex-to-be stayed in the apartment I asked him where he would live. He said, "Oh, I'll just sleep in my car." Of course had had our invitation.
    Enjoy your holiday, Cheers.

  11. The offer is gentle but the strength to make it, to make it real, is immense. This is poem to be grateful for all the welcomes one has received.
