Sunset on the Somass River, Port Alberni

of gathering the garden in,
storing it away to
feed my children
through the winter.
Now, there is just me to feed.
The CoOp has a sale on beans:
kidney, chick pea, black beans, lentils.
I lug them home,
tuck them into the cupboard
like nuts for a winter squirrel.
I have an abundance of beans,
a surfeit of succulence,
a sufficiency of legumes.
Let the Southerly blow in
the gales and lashing rains of winter.
I dream of steamy soups
bubbling on the stove,
a perfect plenitude of potted plenty,
thick with a preponderence of petite potatoes,
a veritable Enough of Enough-ness
to see the winter through.
For Susan's prompt at Midweek Motif: Abundance.
wow - what alliteration there close to the end! it reads almost like a staccato fire listing, which sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteand this is wonderful poem, a great reflection of both past and dropping into the present, and what is needed for the truth of nourishment.
there is nothing quite like "soul" soup!
Reflections on the good long life.
ReplyDeleteThe alliteration adds to the the comfort and playfulness of this poem that carries a serious message so gently. I sang the esses, laughed with the p's. I love the comparison of stored beans like "nuts for a winter squirrel." The instinct that made the gardener and keeps you close to nature is still in force!
ReplyDeleteWhat is better in life than to be yourself, do what you want to do, feel comfortable in your life and eat the fruit of the world...plus hear your dog bark and the whisper of the trees.
ReplyDeleteA lot of comfort in this poem, love.
ReplyDeleteenough of enough-ness..love that!
ReplyDeleteIt's so wonderful to read the poem louder. Love the lilt of alliteration throughout. "Now, there is just me to feed." The nostalgic tone touches deeply. Beautiful, Sherry.
ReplyDeleteA rich larder for the coming winter. An abundance of Yes.
ReplyDeleteThe alliteration near the end of the poem is in itself a form of abundance. Well done!
ReplyDeleteAh, I love legumes — it's a part of our staple diet.
ReplyDeleteI so loved the alliteration, Sherry. The reflection is lovely in how it pictures a life being lived abundantly, with all that is sufficient and plenty to go on. Very well-penned. :-)
A sufficiency of legumes indeed! Bravo! Love this so much!
ReplyDeleteThe alliteration in this poem, made it tastier than it already was. Wonderful write, Sherry!
ReplyDeleteEnough is a beautiful thing and so lucky if we see it as "abundance".
