Beautiful Valley

[My sister, Lori, in Cherryville, great horseback riding country}

Traveler
has reached a plateau
from which she can gaze
far across
a beautiful valley.

There is room
under this expansive sky
to dream golden dreams.

There is enough space
all around
to relax one's shoulders
and breathe
the breath she needs,
to deeply inhale
the smell of sage and
tumbleweeds.

She feels like
spreading her wings
and swooping across
the land below,
like a golden eagle,
like a shooting star,
like a caged-up bird
longing to be
where her kinfolk are.

Earth From Sky II

Traveler
saw the earth
from the back of
a silver eagle,
looking down
on water
dotted with
islands
blue and green,
tall mountain peaks
arising
like a seer's
 most majestic dream.

From above,
she could see
almost as
far as God,
puffy perfect clouds
in an infinity of sky,
a limitless horizon
utterly unflawed,
for man to
set his
fondest aspirations by.

She flew so far
tall coastal mountains
changed to
desert hills,
brown and rounded,
dots of
tumbleweed and sage,
tall sandstone cliffs
lining the arroyo
which have
stood sentinel
for an age,
since a time,
she had
been told,
when this valley
was once
an ancient riverbed,
rushing waters
roaring through here
in bygone days of old.

Traveler,
suspended
between the earth and sky,
protective
celestial sphere above,
patient, steadfast, enduring
earth below,
knows herself a
citizen who can
choose to
walk or fly,
denizen of
no place/every place
she has
ever/never
been,
as well as
of the
spirit world,
all that remains
unseen.

In the desert,
she sought the memory
of the young girl
she once had
been
in this
now so strangely
unfamiliar land
she was
nowhere to
be seen.
That girl
now  lives
a world away,
and free,
within the
siren call
of the wild and
western sea.

When she
returned to earth,
long would she
remember
the sight of earth
from sky,
distant and flawless
as an
untouched dream,
as if
nothing bad
could mar
a vision
of perfection
so beautiful
that so far
only God
has seen.

Flight

One needs
the inspiration
and
the transcendant
loftiness
of flight,
to elevate
the spirit
on this old
earth-bound
planet.

Being of Earth, Being of Sky

[Damian and Great-Gramma]

I am the plodding matriarch,
bowed down under the weight
of my decades,
the weight
of those who press me
to carry the burdens
they don't want to carry.
I am the vast and unrestricted
being of light,
born in a thousand galaxies,
made up of particles of stardust,
strong with the wisdom of the ages,
and able to bear all burdens.

I am tired
with the accumulation
of decades of unremitting effort
gone largely unnoticed.
My body falters
on unsteady legs
that collapse
under me
when I walk too far.
I need a cane and,
on some days,
a scooter.
I refuse both.
Determinedly,
I keep on walking.

I am alive with
the energy of the sun,
fanned by the wings
of a thousand fairies.
In the light of the morning,
I rise and traverse the heavens,
like an orb,
like a daytime moon,
like a trajectory
of shimmering radiance,
a prism refracting
incandescence
through the everness of time.

I climb into bed each night
grateful for rest.
I climb out each morning
alive with
the possibilities
of the day.
I keep breathing.
Each breath,
each new morning,
is a gift
for which
I stay
immensely grateful.
The burdens
are not the journey,
just the accessories
to the journey.
The journey is
the Keeping On.
The journey is the
Staying Grateful.
The journey is
Being Alive.

The body
houses the spirit.
The spirit
fuels the body.
The body walks;
the spirit flies Above.
It flies Beyond.
Spirit knows
where we are going.
Nothing earthbound
can stop its flight
except
our refusal
to fly.
