Night is falling fast within the forest deep.
My pace quickens. I feel the dark trees breathe.
Paws pad beside me, faithful, guardian.
We must find shelter, somewhere safe to sleep.
My pace quickens. I feel the dark trees breathe.
Tall, dark, foreboding, branches lean above my head.
We must find shelter, somewhere safe to sleep.
The night draws close. The forest fills with dread.
Tall, dark, foreboding, branches lean above my head.
My wolf companion whines deep in his throat.
The night draws close. The forest fills with dread.
I lean to pat his ruffled, glistening coat.
The night draws close. The forest fills with dread.
Paws pad beside me, faithful, guardian.
I lean to pat his ruffled glistening coat.
Night is falling fast within the forest deep.
a pantoum, for Hannah's prompt at Real Toads: Transforming Friday: the Black Forest
Beautiful. The companions strengthen each other as the repetition becomes more familiar.
ReplyDeleteWow! How darkly beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love this form!! And I love the feel of this poem! *smile*
ReplyDeleteLove this form as well Sherry! Just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love a pantoum, and this is wonderful! Each line holds its own special beauty.
ReplyDeleteSo mysterious! This is the perfect form to help build the suspense.
ReplyDeleteI feel this almost as a response to Frost's stopping by woods on a snowy evening... but with the added threat.. the form worked so great here.
ReplyDeletePerfect form for this, Sherry...it brings the echo of the deep wood and I love the feeling of comfort found in your guardian. Well done...thank you for joining!!
ReplyDeleteThis is very atmospheric, Sherry. Enjoyed this.
ReplyDeleteYou had me feeling like I was in a movie! Love this one~ Well Done....
ReplyDeleteI will think of you when I walk outside tonight and look at the stars~
Excellent work Sherry. Paws pad the pace of darkness, silently, until sight is no more, but your faithful guardian will guide you to his everlasting light.
ReplyDelete"Paws pad beside me, faithful, guardian"...the line brings so much relief in the dark, foreboding night
ReplyDelete....beautifully worded poem....
The lovely nature in its glory:)
ReplyDeleteah the repetition works really well...i hear your friend in th paws padding as well...cool piece...
ReplyDeleteA lovely form & perfect for a night in black forest with the faithful guardian ~
ReplyDeleteHappy long weekend Sherry~
I love the shivers this piece gave me, a very Tolkien feel to it especially the scary forests! I love love love the wolf element as well... :)
ReplyDeleteThis poem is an adventurous one!!! Love all the wet, looking for shelter, forest action. When I was little I'd go out into the rain and climb up a mountain behind my former home in Pago Pago and just sing in the rain. This poem makes me reminisce...thanks for that Sherry.
ReplyDeleteA pantoum is so hard and you've risen to the challenge beautifully--really well done, Sherry--thanks. k.
ReplyDeleteGosh Sherry - I really do love this - everything about it from form to content - to the gentle comforting feeling that I get that now allows me to get up and go to bed - feeling safe and sheltered :)
ReplyDeleteno fun to be alone in a dark forest and it's good to know there's someone walking next to you... a comforting feel
ReplyDeleteYou have conveyed the atmosphere of some forests very convincingly. I too would go there with a dog.
ReplyDeleteVery fine use of this form. Wonderful message as well--that we all have a need not to be alone in facing the darkness.

ReplyDeleteit draws you near.
ReplyDeleteI love pantoums. Well done Sherry!
ReplyDeleteFeel the intense of the line 'The night draws close. The forest fills with dread.' and like the relief sounds 'Paws pad beside me, faithful, guardian.' ~ very effective form.
ReplyDeleteI took this as almost symbolic...the dark forest, the dread, a dark and uneasy time...to having a faithful companion, to "lean" on...and to find safety and comfort together. Great work with this form Sherry.
ReplyDeleteI felt my heart beat a bit faster as I read your poem the feeling of darkness but, somehow finding comfort in a friend. Interesting form as well. I always enjoy reading your work.
ReplyDeleteThe image portrayed is so vivid...the deep forest and the atmosphere.. I love the poetic form too.. :-)
ReplyDeleteA story conveyed poetically...
ReplyDeleteGood one!
This is wonderful! Just enough and enough space….
ReplyDeleteCanine and wilderness . . . with a touch of edginess . . . It's definitely you, Sherry.
