Woman With Turtle
National Geographic altered art
by Mary MacGowan
In search of home,
Traveler carries a turtle shell
around her heart.
This shield protects vital organs,
lends strength,
consists of skeletal and dermal bone,
remains when everything has gone,
endures.
Turtle Woman
pokes her head out,
surveys the cloudscape,
retreats within
in response to any threat.
Traveler carries a turtle shell
around her heart.
Hi there Sherry, I found this to be an unusual, original and pleasingly complex piece with great juxtaposition and I really enjoyed it very much. I certainly would enjoy reading more from you in this vein. With Best Wishes Scott

ReplyDeleteMany of us need more turtle shell, some have too much. My heart is too soft, too often. Yours too I think. Enjoyed this poem Sherry.

ReplyDeleteI can relate with turtle woman.
ReplyDeleteFantastic.
Got to watch the heart, Sherry, especially while traveling away from home ties. My daughter lost a husband (by her wishes) whose heart strayed while in another state on a hunting trip.

for me, my turtle shell is my Samoan culture and my Christian beliefs. I carry them with me wherever I go for they protect me and are engraved forever in my heart. Great piece Sherry!!!! As I've said before, I love your poetry!
