Beijing, 1989

[Associated Press photo by Jeff Widener]

You stood,
representing
thousands of your
fellow students,
in your white shirt
you stood,
unflinching,
refusing to
retreat,
bringing the row
of tanks
to a halt.
You made us
cheer,
halfway round
the world,
at how one person,
when his moment
has arrived,
can stare into the face
of an oppressive
regime
and say:
No,
I will not
be moved.

You claimed
your moment.
You stepped up,
engraving
the image
forever
on my heart.

Another world away,
we watched,
we stood
with you,
and we
applauded.
