Monsters

for Poets United's Thursday Think Tank prompt: Monsters

As a child,
my son dreamed
often
of monsters.
I'd hear him
calling out,
thrashing
in his bed,
terrified
of the ogres
that peopled
his dreams.

What I didn't know
was a
real, live
monster
visited
my daughter,
when she
was small.

It took
forty-one years
to learn
the true source
of her pain.
