In the Monastery of the Heart

These days,
when the news
everywhere
is bad,
when the endless
wrangling
of the Talking Heads
makes me shake
my own
befuddled head
at the
utter futility
of all those Words -
the completely unproductive
histrionics
that change nothing -
I turn the tv off.
I do not turn on
the radio.

I live in
the sweet silence
of No Words
and No Sound,
save those of the breeze
blowing through
the wall of green cedar
outside my window.

I draw the sweet twitter
of junco,
the shrill cry of stellar jay,
into my being
like balm,
tranquil counterpoint
to the silence
living in my soul.

Routinely,
I turn the noise
completely off,
(or never
turn it on),
and retreat
to the
sweet peace
of the monastery
of my heart.

  1. Beautiful. I wish, indeed, that none of the talk had power.

  2. Nice. I will take the music of nature any day.

The TV can stay off as far as I am concerned. And most of the radio. I cant stand hand talk radio or the morning radio shows.

but silence, and retreating to that place inside me. I def know the power of and necessity of that.

  4. The twitter of juncos is ever so much better than the tweets that come from the one who shall not be named!

  5. I too keep off the radio and the tv. Noise is so hateful nowadays, both sides yammering at each other. I much prefer the silence of the breezes. Lovely poem Sherry.

  6. Sherry,
I can immediately connect to your poem. I rarely watch television these days..to escape the never ending repetition of stories..endless sad stories and news we cannot change.
I absolutely love the silence in my home to write, read or talk..Silence is to be preserved:) Eileen

  11. Those of us that live alone do cherish the quiet of our lives (for the most part) happy that nature fulfils our need then we can sometimes to mingle with others of our choosing.
