We Have Forgotten

We have forgotten
that the War to End All Wars
was supposed to end all war.

We have forgotten
that peace cannot be won
by hatred and killing,
but only by love and unity.

We have forgotten
that we are made of stardust,
and come from beauty and mystery.

We have forgotten
that a blue true dream of sky
is all we need to be truly happy.

We have forgotten
that in our cellular and collective memory
is the mindfulness of peace:
a swirling glory of stars
on one of which, blue and green,
a race of humans evolved,
raising their eyes in wonder to the skies,
eating roots and berries,
living in harmony with the land
and each other,
beasts and humans
helping each other learn to live together.

We have forgotten
that, in our heart of hearts,
and in our dream of dreams,
this is
who we truly are.

for the wonderful prompt at dVerse: How We Forget. If you have not visited the site and watched this video of a poet, Loyce Gayo,  speaking her deepest truth, please dont miss it. It is ASTONISHING.

  1. I think we have all forgotten the memories of peace and living in harmony with nature and each other ~ All around us is this struggle to win the war and see who gets the largest slice of the trophy ~ What even saddens me are stories now about the use of raping women as a policy for the soldiers ~ Thanks for participating Sherry and wishing you happy week ~

  2. Hopefully one day we mature beyond seeing war as the only way to peace. Evolving to see the value in all humans hopefully is the next step in our progression.

  4. Oh there are days when I seem to loose all hope, and other when I realize that humanity can change.. the thought that we can end the war with war is devastating...

  5. We have forgotten
    that peace cannot be won
    by hatred and killing,
but only by love and unity.

There are several such times when I wish that the world would be engulfed by love and peace.. and that hatred and war would be vanquished forever... perhaps that time will come soon...
    Beautifully penned!

    Lots of love,
    Sanaa

  7. "We have forgotten
that, in our heart of hearts,
and in our dream of dreams,
    this is
    who we truly are."

Yes, this. You have so many really wonderful lines in this, but this closer says it all fro me.

  8. I adore this poem as verse, as metaphor, & its message is a delicate blend of utopian & dystopian elements. It is probably just the cynical historian residing in me, but I do find myself at odds with the premise, for human nature, from pithacantrapus erectus to J.J. Kool Jay, has been bellicose & combative, as humans banded together & had to protect themselves from predators & other men. Even in Lumeria & Atlantis, war was part of it all.

  13. Yes our memory is so faulty. Hope we remember who we can be before it's too late. Love this poem Sherry and will visit Dverse.
I haven't had internet in about a week, so haven't visited anyone. I did read most of the your poems I missed but didn't comment. Will not be fully participating 'til next week. I'm now getting ready to visit grandkids and I now when I'm with them they are my focus. I've missed you. Glad to be plugged in again.
