The mad sun rides the heavens like a cyclops,
scorching all with his glare.
Grass turns brown and crunchy.
Wildfires incinerate the hills.
The water tables run alarmingly low.
And it is only June.
Somehow late-summer
has come too soon.
for Susan's prompt at Mid Week Motif: Entering Summer
Here in the valley we are breaking all records for "hottest spring on record", "lower water table than has ever been recorded this early in the season", "the entire provincial annual budget for fighting wildfires has already been used up." It is a huge concern. Yet all we can do is move forward into the days and weeks, and try to stay out of the sun.
All I can say, is thank goodness there is no climate change? Try to stay cool....xoxo
ReplyDeleteAmazing that you are breaking all records of that kind, when we here are waiting for days when it will be decent swimming weather. Today is finally one of those days!
ReplyDeleteIt made me smile at first, the metaphor of 'cyclope' sun, but then the concern of low table of water...yeap, everything is well when balanced...
ReplyDeleteHow mythic, the bright eye glaring! I am beginning to understand the extremes that birthed mythic storytelling. I hope this is a short phase and not a return to extreme times. Beautifully written.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe wee hours of dawn hold some relief and the late evening here but the sun is so strong it seems to make me melt.
Sometimes the heat of the sun can be a bit too overwhelming.. Beautifully penned :)
ReplyDeleteLots of love,
Sanaa
staying true and relishing the freedom of light is all we can hope for, nicely done.
ReplyDeleteHere, we are so welcoming to the sun....still a bit cool at night and some days, but come on sun, we need you here, smiles ~
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear of the extreme heat over there I think our turn next. . Love the sun scorching all with his glare and riding the heavens like a cyclops.Keep Cool !
ReplyDeleteIt is a pity so many of our politicians are climate skeptics as they get backhanders from polluters.
ReplyDeleteLike the cyclops reference!!
ReplyDeleteWe are in a rainy/cool pattern. A couple of goods days followed by a couple of bad days. I would enjoy some sun.
ReplyDeleteHa...monsoon has tamed our mad sun here in India...lower water table is a matter of grave concern...love the image of the sun riding heavens like cyclops...
ReplyDeleteLet's hope the cyclops winks or blinks
ReplyDeleteI can see how you wouldn't be waxing too lyrical about this — but you brought it vividly to life.
ReplyDeleteShort and compact, yet fraught with symbolism. That's what poetry's all about, Sherry! Brilliant!!
ReplyDeleteI am sure, a bolt of lightning ..and a few cloud bursts would storm the cyclops...Amen! Millions continue to suffer in drought here..esp in the western part of India...., we are used to hearing the warns of famine every now and then. So, I hear your concern..
Let's hope for the best....
A dry year isn't good when this is the result.
ReplyDeleteEven nature has its moments of madness..i guess all living things are equal xo
ReplyDeleteYes! We had a delightfully cool May, but now temps are hovering just below 110f!
ReplyDeleteAnd what are they thinking? Those who say there's no such thing as climate change?
ReplyDeleteYour poem is scorching with honest observation!
luv the cyclops sun;
ReplyDeletethough i wrote of a usual rainy season, roght now its still quite hot and more sunny than rainy

much love...
Oh dear...my brows furrow with concern...I hope that it will cool and rain will visit. ♥
ReplyDeleteand we humans, because we can't hear below 20 hz or over 20,000 (and me a much narrower range), somehow believe if we can't see/smell/touch/hear/taste it, it's not 'real'. sigh. ~
ReplyDeleteThis really evoked the very hot Summer you are experiencing, Sherry, and the poem certainly makes a great point about climate change and the way the seasons have been upset... Well written!
