We placed flowers on your grave.
We placed them for you, weeping.
We placed flowers on your grave.
Tell me, are you sleeping?
Are you above the clouds now?
Where did your spirit soar?
The song you sang was too short,
and we wanted so much more.
We placed red roses there for love,
crushed petals on your bed.
There were yellow ones for farewell,
but we'll hold you close instead.
We placed flowers on your grave.
We placed them for you, weeping.
We placed flowers on your grave.
I plucked one petal, for safekeeping.

My grandson, Josh, left for the spirit world on November 4th. The family is devastated. He was such an amazing human. Gentle and kind.
That is a beautiful poem, Sherry.
ReplyDeleteSuch a moving stanza:
"We placed red roses there for love,
crushed petals on your bed.
There were yellow ones for farewell,
but we'll hold you close instead."
What a tragic loss.
This is so tragic and incredibly moving...that one petal for safekeeping brought tears... hugs Sherry...

ReplyDeleteThe flowers speak with all the profundity of grief at this tragedy, with each repetition, like petals unfolding, asking at its heart, "where did your spirit soar?" May you and your family be comforted, Sherry.
ReplyDelete"The song you sang was too short,
ReplyDeleteand we wanted so much more."
Of course, you write a song for the troubadour who carries the news of this tragic occasion. Most beautiful and full of heart. I am so sorry for your loss.
This is such a poignant poem, Sherry, and my sympathy goes to you and your family. It’s a tragedy to lose someone so young and vibrant. I love the way you have evoked his youthful spirit, especially in the lines:
ReplyDelete‘The song you sang was too short,
and we wanted so much more’,
and this line made me shed a tear:
‘I plucked one petal, for safekeeping.’
