BUNIONS AND PEARLS

Wild Woman
of the Western Sea,
send me some wisdom.

Send me some strength.
Send me some inspiration.

How do I turn this
hard old crusty bunion
of a life
into a pearl?

A small offering from 2011, re-posted for Poets United's Poetry Pantry. Do come join us for some good reading, to go with your coffee on Sunday morning.

  1. No need to turn this life into a pearl, Sherry. You are already a GEM! Smiles.

    2. in that you wish it to be it is if but for this moment for that is the way of the universe. i echo Mary and Brudberg

i am flailing about trying to learn the subtlties of the waves in this sea of life. sometimes my head rises above water, sometimes i'm wading but i am treading. like many, i've had a tough last six weeks but commiserating with such lovely people like yourself and all the others in this site assuages the sadness and the angst. gracias for sharing your stroll, mi amiga

  3. Couldn't help smiling at your bunion image! And I wholeheartedly agree with Mary. However, I also feel the intensity of your plea from the heart. The pearl is there, but I think you are too close to it to see. Maybe take some time to pause, scrape off some of the sand, and take another look?

  4. Sherry,...your poem speaks directly to my condition and heart. It's a dark time in the old world right now....and I am thrashing around for some wisdom and deliverance. Thank you, dear soul and friend.

  6. The crusty bunion implies roads have been travelled and the earth has been felt... Much better than a pearl that just sits in a velvet box... :)

  13. What disparate images! I suppose having a bunion at all is a pearl of life. The opportunity to spin pearl from sand. I think there is a secret wisdom in this poem :-)

  22. What to you is a bunion to others is a pearl, as you can see. I also feel worn to a sore to extra padding at times, so LOVE the comparison. I think your plea is a good prayer to help the earth as well.

  23. You are a precious jewel with many facets. Perhaps you are looking at the wrong ones? Or maybe your age has dimmed your eyesight? We seldom see clearly that which is closest to us.

  24. It's probably most important to have the intention to transform life into a pearl. Do you know that you have become that?
