My beloved Wickanninish
With these keys, I will paint you
a honeydew melon patch at the far side of summer,
draped in dew-kissed webs, the spidery artist
long-gone on its trembling legs.
I will sketch for you a patch of shy fiddlehead ferns,
unfurling delicately, blushing green,
to the tender song of the brook.
I will paint you a sky-high sun over the mountains,
so you may clearly see the path of the waterfall down its slopes,
and I will colour in perfect puffy storybook clouds,
birds of many colours,
a rock covered with growling, barking sea lions,
and a gray whale, leaping, far out at sea.
if you are still not sated, wait one instant more,
and I will, with a flourish,
create for you a star-flung sky
create for you a star-flung sky
just before midnight, frost crackling underfoot,
scent of wood-smoke on the almost-winter air,
and I will pencil in the faint sleepy cry
of an owl going into its burrow
just before dawn.
Sunrise over Tofino Inlet
So like the weather we are having this autumn - clear, crisp as nature revolves. You put me right there in the trees with the brook and stars above.

ReplyDeleteNature with its immense beauty and color reaches the heart and soul Lovely write and Paint...Sherry you are an artist ...!
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful Sherry! Did you see the article in Vanity Fair? Perhaps Van Gosh was murdered instead of suicide?
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful picture you have painted...I want to step right into it and breathe it's essence. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteSherry, this is a wonderful poem, full of lovely images. Among many, I particularly loved "a honeydew melon patch at the far side of summer,"
ReplyDeleteMy lovely neighbor to the north, my partner in poetics, in word smithing, in painting with the beauteous language that swells up within by just being immersed in the natural splendor of where you reside; a stirring, sensual, accurate picture you painted, & the last stanza is killer.
ReplyDeleteLoving song it is, Sherry. I esp. love "I will sketch for you a patch of shy fiddlehead ferns,
ReplyDeleteunfurling delicately, blushing green,
to the tender song of the brook." ~ the sounds here - so musical! Have to read it aloud! x
Oh what beauty.. those colors of nature.. but It's the inclusion of the owl that speaks most to me.. (and the photo is gorgeous).
ReplyDeleteOh Sherry, the images in this are just delicious. A fiddlehead fern sky--how perfect is that! I could go on and on but I'd just have to copy and paste the poem. This is a keeper!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful poem Sherry. It made me happy to read it. I love the photos. I had never focused on it per se, but realize now that you take some really good pictures.

ReplyDeleteGreat photo. Beautiful autumn images of a loved place.
ReplyDeleteYour beautiful words paint a picture as lovely as they are. I can only paint in words and photography, too, but both of those draw wonderful pictures, too.

just before dawn."
I loved this, Sherry. You are an artist with your words and your photography.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully composed Sherry, love all those images you paint with your words.
