Words
I fell in love with words
at age eight,
scribing with care the word "paw,"
which was suddenly beloved.
The first poem came through
at age fourteen,
as I sat, bemused,
at my school desk,
the lines appearing
before me on the page,
coming from I knew not where.
And now, so suddenly,
I am old.
It is the first of April,
the first day of NaPoWriMo,
and I am still
stringing words along.
They are more tired now,
as am I.
But I am grateful
they keep coming.
for Marian's prompt at Real Toads on this first day of NaPoWriMo: One, or being first.

I love the call back to the first poem and how you describe the thrill of seeing the words stack up for the first time. How clever!
ReplyDeleteIt's great that the words keep coming. Happy Easter to you and your loved ones.
ReplyDeleteI love your poem, it made me smile. I just wrote one for tomorrow that is a tribute to the words. I love synchronicity.

I think I was 18 when I wrote my first poem and haven't stopped since. I LOVE words too. They are like combinations to unlock the mysteries.

Your words never sound old. Wise but never old.
ReplyDeleteYour words are beautiful in my eye. I can imagine you at eight and fourteen but I have no idea whether or not your words have suffered being older.
ReplyDelete..

ReplyDeleteI love the chronology of your poem, Sherry, the thread of words throughout your life, which so many of us share. Keep those words coming!

Some days it feels like time leapt from the first word to the many that accompanyus now. Actually, I've started losing some.
