Bye Bye Miss American Pie

A long time ago,
when the world was young,
our dreams were as sweet
as all the songs ever sung.
By a virus’s petard
we’re now hung,
and everything
has come unstrung.
We’re all hiding, scared, inside,
and it feels like
somewhere,
 the music died.

“Bye Bye Miss American Pie”.
Our dreams are all busted.
They were high as the sky.
Now we’re kaput;
we are left high and dry.
Will this “be the day that I die?”
Will this “be the day that I die.”

The orange king sat like a horny toad.
“The best virus ever! I’ll be great!” he crowed.
His minions hooded their eyes
at the smirk he bestowed.
We're screwed, my friends.
They're all talking in code.
Stay safe. Let's all try not to die.

Now I don’t know where this song will go,
but I fear it is places we do not yet know.
“Bye, Bye Miss American Pie."
Our dreams are all busted.
They were high as the sky
till “the day the music died.”

When I looked at the image, this song popped into my head. This isn't the poem I would like to have written about it. But it's a beginning.

For Carrie at The Sunday Muse's 100th post! Yay!

  1. I love that this song popped into your head! I stood onstage in Anchorage in the 80s with Don McClean and sang it ... loud and proud!!!

  2. That song does come to mind loud and clear Sherry. I love how you strung in the lyrics with your heart felt poetic words. These are crazy times all the way around. Be safe my friend.

  3. Great use of the song, and a song that makes no sense - like this damned virus. Stay strong, Sherry - as strong as your beautiful words. In the UK there are a lot of allusions to the Dunkirk Spirit, remembering a time when we were all alone in a dangerous world and all pulled together, won and thrived. We all will again.

  4. Very nicely written, Sherry. I fit that and most of us folk getting along fit this rather well. I am ready to die, but would rather not. I have had a good life, probably better than many.
Thanks for including "Bye Bye Miss American Pie" in your poem, that is still one of my favorites. I used to know all the words and probably could sing along.
Thanks for reading my work, Sherry, I don't think you are hooked up with Mr. Linky.

  7. I had the song going through my head too. Just thinking how fitting it would be if the toad croaked. It is scary to think will this "be the day that I die". My best friend is a paramedic and she's currently getting tested and I'm afraid for her and for everyone.
