Life's Golden Beauty All I Know

I try to hold the flickering flame
fast faltering my eyes before,
to clasp it for some moments more,
its magic mine to keep and tame.
it flickers out, no one to blame.

I try to slow the speeding days,
delay them as they canter past.
I want them to forever last;
they rush towards sunset's golden haze,
extinguish in a fiery blaze.

One does not ask the question "Why?"
We live our lives, hoping the end
will answer like a loving friend.
Our choices, as the days go by,
have cast our fate. We live. We die.

Sunset too close, lit by its glow,
I want this life to never end,
as day by day my last ones spend,
bedazzled by its fiery show ~
life's golden beauty, all I know.

I borrowed the meter and rhyme scheme from Judith Wright's Woman to Man, as the rhythm appealed to me. This was an exercise in finding words to fit the rhyme scheme.

  8. A beautifully written rhyme, your words speak to my heart as I contemplate my own life's shorter days.

  10. Ha. We can waste a lot of time asking why and wondering about it, or we can just choose to live life in spite of it - and perhaps in the end that answer is a gentle friend - or our questions will no longer need to be answered - you know.

  13. Very nice, Sherry. True too. I no longer count days up to ___ (whatever age). Now I count down to when I think I might expire. Not long at all !!! I don't know exactly when I started doing that way.

  15. Well, I think you did a great job with the rhyme scheme, but an even greater job with your thoughts. I love the way you speak of sunsets, our lives, the process and the ending. Beautiful. BTW Love the photo too. It's spectacular.

  16. I like the image of the days "cantering" past. Indeed they do...you've given voice to what is in many of our heads, no doubt, as the days "dwindle down to a precious few."
