THE DOGS OF MARIUPOL

The dogs of Mariupol look at us
with questions in their eyes.
As the bombs fall, they quake
in terror, but can find
no safe place.

The women protectors cannot stop
the bombs; they come non-stop.
But they give food and love,
and reassurance. They say,
"We will not abandon you.
We will not turn away.
We will be your light,
your warmth,
your comfort.
Our fates will rise and fall
together."

On facebook this morning I saw this video about two women in Ukraine who are caring for the terrified abandoned dogs who are victims of the war. They are saving the dogs, and say the dogs are saving them. As dogs do.

As always, it is the animals who have my heart in these human-caused situations under which they suffer, struggling to survive.

  5. This touched me. So often animals are left when people have too much on their mind.

  11. Sadly the less obvious victims of war often go unnoticed. Thank goodness some care. A moving piece indeed.

This poem could only come straight from your heart.
You might be interested to know that I have been trying to adopt a rescue dog, and have been refused for ageism, & the fact that after a 30-min application, you have to set up an appointment with every household member to meet the dog. My husband has dementia, &is unable to go.
    Their response was, “No exceptions.”

This poem could only come straight from your heart.
I have been trying to adopt a dog, and have been met with ageism, 30-min application, & they want all family members present to meet dog. With my husband’s dementia, this is not possible.

  15. Happy belated birthday, Sherry! A dedicated, heartfelt poem. I have been trying to adopt a dog, and ageism came into play. 30-min applications, then a meeting that has to have all family members present. When I told them my husband would not be able to come due to illness, they said, "No Exceptions."
