Along the Shores of the Zambezi

Along the shores of the Zambezi
we travelled, eyes alert for lion, leopard,
elephant,
the giraffe's long spotted neck.

Beneath the stalwart baobab,
we stopped to share: smiles,
wine, cheese and bread, and
the adventure of our lives.

I picked a red flame lily for you;
you put it in my hair.
It was summer
on the savannah; we had no idea, then,
how beautiful we were, or how
our memories would
keep returning and returning,
across the years,
to all we
encountered there.

for Carrie at The Muse. Happy New Year!

  1. I love the remembering, the kind of nostalgic yearning, for what once was but cannot be again -- except through memory and poem! Happy New Year, Sherry!

  6. I feel like I have been there too though I never have. Have read so many memoirs and watched many movies about Africa, which has always claimed a part of my heart. My friend actually made it there - she actually sailed across the Serengetti in a hot air balloon at dawn. Sigh. Her photos are amazing.

  7. The closest I have come to Africa is in dreams. I will have to share one with you some time. Thanks for taking me there through your words.

  8. Sherry, I like the mystical atmosphere you have woven in your poem. Those kinds of memories, even if only dreams, can carry us through. I love the imagery of you picking a flower and having the other person put it in your hair.

  9. Lots of memories of those nice drives. My favorite was a solo on my Vespa motor scooter riding along the Rio Grande, either side. I'd do it when I wanted a furlough from home.

  11. If this is true, a beautiful memory; if fantasy, beautiful thought ... a gift either way!
