KODIAK

I.

Drink deeply
of the peace of the forest,
Brother Wolf.
Walk softly
so man cannot find you.
Hide when you hear
him coming.

Forest guardians have told me
you and Brother Bear
are starving
for lack of salmon,
because we have not
listened to the earth
about the balance she needs
to be well.

Drink deeply
in these moments
when your life is
as it should be.
None of us know
when our last drink,
our last peace,
our last moment
has come.

- for the creatures of the wild

II.

He is white
with spooky light blue eyes
and big, wolfy ears.

He loves me.
He stands on his hind legs
peering in my window
to find me.
When our eyes meet
he cavorts giddily,
like a silly boi,
insisting I come out
to pat his wolfy ears
and give him treats.

He is alert
to every movement
in our vicinity.
He is wildness,
contained,
restrained,
but with a large spirit
that longs to
run free through the forest
or along the sandy shore.
He would,
if he were mine,
but he belongs to another,
who will soon move away.

One more white wolf
to invade my heart
then disappear.
But, for now,
the joy of loving him
is enough.

  1. I recently read an article that stated we are losing animal species at more than 1,000 times the “normal” ~~~ it's a devastating and hard to grasp fact. Everyone knew your poetry would be perfectly crafted for Carrie's image today. Brava!

  3. I loved both of these poems and yes, drink deeply in peace and the moments. None of us know when our last drink will be. So very true, we must honor our time and care for the land and all life that inhabits this beautiful planet called earth. A lovely tribute to your four legged friend.

  7. the 'drink deeply' command as repeat line has such a powerful impact.
Kodiak must sense how much you know of his roots - our hearts are meant to swell then break with love for creatures and each other

  8. Gorgeous poems--the second one might have stuck in the eye, just a bit (although the brevity in both spoke to the simmering sadness left over from the past year).

  12. We must hold on to now, roam the wild before the wild and the wonders it holds is lost. I love both of these poems. They reach down deep in my spirit.

    to invade my heart
