Hungry Bear
There's a hungry bear in the forest;
tummy rumbling, she gives a low growl.
Her cub follows behind her,
hungry too.
Up the tree she goes;
her cub climbing too.
She is eating something,
possibly eggs from the eagles' nest.
The eagles are distraught.
She has to be a very hungry bear
to climb to the top of a tree
for a snack.
Two-leggeds have devoured so much,
in our spiritual poverty,
that the wild ones are starving.

This is amazing footage taken here on Vancouver Island. The woman who took it said no eggs were eaten. But I don't know what else the bear could have been eating up there except eggs. Sad for the bear, the cub, and the eagles, all struggling to survive in our too-crowded world, food sources drying up for the creatures and, one day, likely, for Two-leggeds too.
wow! just...wow!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is amazing. I am thinking they were hungry and ate the eagle eggs. A bear swam across the river not far from hear and was seen walking on a busy street. The animal control people were able to direct it back to the river.

DeleteThose black bears up an eagle tree remind me of thin polar bears foraging in a Siberian town. What hunger will drive them to. How little we notice, much less care, while we feast. Thanks Sherry - Brendan
ReplyDeleteAmazing. We're seeing the world devour itself. Thanks for this stark footage of reality.
ReplyDeleteMaybe she's eating tender shoots I love the simple straightforwardness of this poem that barely hides its shimmering passion.
ReplyDeleteTruth. It is our spiritual poverty that devours us, and everything in our path.
ReplyDeleteMyrna is right...the world is devouring itself. We can only hope something will be left to rebirth a new world. This may only be possible if humans destroy themselves first.
ReplyDeleteGosh. That bear must be starving. How very very sad. Suzanne - Mapping Uncertainty
ReplyDeleteAn amazing video, and I’m so glad it inspired you to write this poem, Sherry, We have no bears here and no idea what it’s like to come across one, especially a hungry one – with cubs. It must be so hard to survive, when humans have used up all the land and the food. Myrna and Kerfe are right about the world eating itself.
