The Forest's Song

I am fortunate to have this forest
within walking distance

If one were to join in
the forest's song,
one would need to attune
to the heartbeat of trees,
thrum the roots and connections
across the forest floor,
decipher the patter
of raindrops on lichen,
of sunlight on salal,
find the key that opens
the ancients' door.

One would learn to echo
the osprey's call,
the cry of the tern,
the seabirds, all.

One would sing down the sun
at the close of day,
blissed in a world
where we all belong,
if one were to join in
the forest's song,
and stop singing the song
we have gotten
so wrong.

  1. The ending sums it up...if everyone were required to disappear into the forest for a while,it could be a totally changed world.

  2. I love how trees communicate with each other. A gorgeous list of beauties to be found if only we were smart enough to seek.

  3. I think the forest do sing... but we do not have the patience to listen... To quote Treebeard talking about Entish:

"It is a lovely language, but it takes a very long time saying anything in it, because we do not say anything in it, unless it is worth taking a long time to say, and to listen to."

  4. If we would, indeed... how perfect and life-giving our song would become.

  6. Do trees have heartbeats? In any case, woods have always been calming, spiritual places of renewal and mystery for me.

  8. The song we've gotten so wrong....how tragic! If only...but is it too late?

  9. This sounds so inviting, Sherry. My sister and would spend half a day down at the wooded creek on our family farm. It was at the far corner of the property, later Dad had the corner land across the creek and the creek itself a natural preserve. The grass over there was native prairie grass
I have never seen an osprey, I know they are a type of hawk and unclean for for eating by the Jewish and Islamic folk.

Sometimes when so engrossed one gets off-track easily. Getting back on-track can be easy if done early!

  12. Have we got it all wrong? I'll say we have. We exist because of our environment and the delicate balance that is there; but as we have the power we are hell bent of destroying everything that doesn't make a profit. I asked the birds, animals and insects if I can join them and they shake their head in fear.

  13. Very true. We are wrong and it's time to mend things

  14. Love the call of the forest! All we can do is keep trying to answer and maybe we will join in at some point. I am lucky to have a forest nearby as well--to my dog's great delight.

  15. You are right, we have gotten the song all wrong. I cannot say, we will ever get it right?

  16. I do wonder about the heartbeat and song of trees... yes, of course we have it wrong, but we are too arrogant to admit this.

  17. We need to relearn the words to this song.
