The Corpse of Democracy

The orange man blusters
and rages,
creating a ruckus
that keeps all eyes on him.

But hush! behind all the racket
and distraction,
we begin to discern
an inscrutable agenda.
In the background, his henchmen
are quietly dismembering
the corpse of democracy.

For Shay's prompt at Fireblossom Friday: to write a poem with the most important detail in the background. I did this rather literally, as the political situation consumes too many of my thoughts these days. I seriously can't believe what I am hearing.

  1. I can picture them like carrion birds, digging in to get the bits they want.

  2. Washington has been referred to as kabuki theater before, but never has the feeling of a show with shadow figures pulling the strings been quite this obvious. A time where one can only hope the old saw is true: this too shall pass.

  4. Goodness, that's dark... hope that's not the case.

  5. I rarely use the term "visceral" to describe anything I read. But I think this piece deserves the label. I have a biological reaction to the trueness in this words--my gut feels them... and my heart mourns the implications.

  7. There seems to be so many surprises and uncertainties. It is unsettling!
