The Significance of Orange

The future is tense
and painted in unexpected colours.
There are walls,
and armed guards every six feet
with semi-automatics,
ready to use a hammer
to pound in a thumbtack.

2017 is painted
with an orange glow,
the colour of his skin,
taking up too much space
on my tv screen
and in my head.
Maybe it's a toxic haze
slowly covering the mountains,
now that climate change
no longer exists,
or a platoon of grinning pumpkins
with steely gimlet eyes,
sent in to the castle
to plunder the goodies.

The public is divided: half unaware
of what they have done,
the other half too aware
for our own peace of mind.

The future is tense,
and so am I,
trying to figure out
this new orange haze.

  1. Strangely enough, or not, the color orange represents pleasure, especially physical or sexual pleasure. I'm with you, confused and concerned by the public's seeming lack of real knowing.

  2. Haha, groan, sigh, shudder. And that isn't all. Good poem.

  3. Makes me wonder -- too much, about the coming year! Hoping for better days than I am imagining! Your poem is, sadly, spot on. Wishing you happiness as the year ends. :)

  4. Oh, so eerily descriptive in all directions. I shudder. What have they done...

  5. That's democracy in a dish, Sherry. Or maybe, we should await a modern day Caesar.
