Little Girl Blue

When a little girl
grows up without a dad,
she spends years
and tears
looking for love
in all the wrong places.
She looks for eyes that approve
in all the wrong faces.
She looks in the mirror
for identity,
seeking to identify
her father's traces.

She wonders why
she wasnt enough
to make him stay.
She wonders if he thought of her
all the years he stayed away.
Looking for love,
she finds a bumpy road
of  heartache
all along the way.

But, if life is kind,
there comes a day
out of the blue,
when a man
with a heart
both good and true
arrives
to soothe all of the hurt away,
and finally she knows
he is the one
who'll never
walk away.

for Susan's prompt at Mid Week Motif: Fathers. I could have gone in a few directions with this, but decided on my youngest daughter's story. Thankfully, she married her good man last year.

  1. Bless you, SHerry! This is a good blue little girl story, and true for so many. The rhyme here makes it seem easy, and it would fit in a nursery rhyme book. Maybe it should, to support those little ones--girls and boys--who might need more than fairytales to let them know it won't always be like this.

  3. A very important message here, Sherry. Yes, it's a tough road when children are abandoned either physically, emotionally or both. Your daughter is very fortunate...good for her!

  6. We can't be responsible for the mistakes of others, only ourselves...we stayed, we loved, we never went away. I am so glad she found her man!

  7. What a happy ending, Sherry. A heart-warming tale. I like when stories turn out this way. They don't always...sigh. Was the childhood photo also a photo of her?

  12. A little girl lost without a Dad father-figure is a real thing. More so when more aligned to a Dad as opposed to a son aligned to the Mom. It is a natural thing

  14. Sadly not all fathers live up to expectations but life always presents us opportunities to redress that with wise decisions. A beautiful true story you have told here Sherry.

  16. quite touching and true for it happens to 'little boy blue' also. you know that abandonment issue thingy. always trying so hard to get attention and love, many times the wrong way in the wrong places.

  19. This poem is made all the more beautiful by the postscript...it also depicts a loving mother knowing what her daughter needs and wants...hoping for it...celebrating it when it comes...

  21. Sherry,

Powerfully true in this example of life without a father present in her life. Such a common happening now across the world. Hard to imagine relating to the missing parent, ever again. However, life may show a kinder heart, as in your poem.

Beautifully penned, Sherry. Though the initial lines were disturbing...in fact, heartbreaking. But, the concluding paragraph makes the heart really really happy :D Thanks Sherry for sharing this... :)

  26. Such a melancholy poem, Sherry, until the last stanza which brought relief and a smile. The smile became broader when I saw that it was a real story, which fortunately had that very happy end.
