We once dreamed we could change the world,
and God knows that we tried,
but the visionaries and the dreamers
some dark souls could not abide.
They killed our fallen heroes
and our souls went into shock,
sold our dreams out to the Man,
kept the key but lost the lock.
But I'll never stop believing.
I cant live without a dream.
I have to hope that peace will come,
that Love will reign supreme.
If we can change only ourselves,
one true heart at a time,
we still might turn this thing around,
the bells of peace still chime.
Lamb's love will quell the lion's roar,
all weapons put away,
the children inherit a better world
than they live in today.
I live in hope until the last.
I will not give it up.
I can not live another way
than drinking from Love's cup.
written for Marian's wonderful prompt at Real Toads: to write a poem based on our response to Steve Earl's heart-stirring song, Jerusalem. Check out the song over at Toads. It went straight to my heart.
Beautiful, Sherry. I will never stop believing either. I love that song. I am a big fan of Steve Earl.

We really have to keep our dreams alive, Sherry. We may not be able to change the world, but we can change a few things perhaps. We just have to keep on loving....as a way of life. It is the only way! Wise words here, Sherry.
ReplyDeleteWell said! A song that fits my soul.
ReplyDeleteYour poem goes straight to my heart. I'd rather be a dreamer than to think we lost the dream. I think there's always hope, this world can change.
ReplyDeletePerfect, Sherry.
ReplyDeleteOh Sherry, no one writes hope better than you do...
ReplyDeleteoh i will never stop believing either....without a dream there is not much hope of living...and without hope of change we are doomed to this world as is or worse....lovely write sherry
ReplyDelete"kept the key but lost the lock". Brilliant! That line is going to stick with me for awhile.
ReplyDeleteyessssss.... i will join you, Sherry. also your rhymes are very effective here, hypnotic, almost.
ReplyDeletekept the key but lost the lock.
ReplyDeleteThis is classic, Sherry! It conveys the real situation of how the decision makers are trying to justify what others plainly can see as bunkum. Wonderful write on a sad subject!

If this isn't a poetic banner of hope, then I don't know what is.
ReplyDeleteI wish many more people read the poem...love this song of dream and hope...
ReplyDeleteSherry, no one has made a bigger dent then you. Don't stop dreaming.
ReplyDeleteThe world needs dreamers like you, Sherry, and you're not the only one. Perhaps there will be peace in our time.
ReplyDeleteLuv, K
i live with a heaviness in my heart for the pain that is wantonly expressed by those whose souls are empty of caring let alone love.
ReplyDeletenice write, mi amiga
From your lips to God's ears...
ReplyDeleteSo hope you have enough hope for all of us...
ReplyDeleteI live in hope too that someday peace will be the way.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Kerry's comments--I don't know that people can change--but hope so==am caught by your fervor. Thanks, Sherry. k.
ReplyDeletedrinking love's cup is a good thing to do... and change always starts with ourselves and spreads from there... here's to a peaceful future
ReplyDeleteYou are the reason why the sixties will rise again!
ReplyDeleteSomeday.
"If we can change only ourselves,
ReplyDeleteone true heart at a time,
we still might turn this thing around,
the bells of peace still chime."
Yes!
I love the way you used the Lion and the lamb and the closing with Love's cup is so poignant, Sherry.
Beautifully expressed!
Beautiful, Sherry! I look forward to hearing what inspired you words~ I have missed writing and reading poems~
ReplyDelete"change ourselves." that's my favorite message in this poem. change the negatives to positives.
ReplyDeleteHope is necessary! Dreams are also necessary!
