Earthlings II

Upon your lap, my Mother Earth,
I listen to the river's song,
of renewal and rebirth,
that calls me home where I belong.

Like a tree, my roots go down,
deeply where there is no sound,
only earthworms burrowing,
through hallowed ground.
.
Like a tree, when harsh winds blow,
that assault me, then grow still,
the  fickle weather helps me grow,
changing me, as weather will.

Like a tree, my center lies
  where human folly is forsaken.
Your heartbeat says:
Endure. Just wait,
These earthlings one day
will awaken.
.

  6. The river and tree make such wonderful imagery and connect us to earth. I am fortunate to live near a river...I'm sure when I return home, it will be suffering from drought that has hit the Sierra Nevada. Nice use of form in this, too.

  25. I loved the way you've compared yourself to a deeply rooted tree. I think those who are in touch with the root of their being can weather any storm the world will whip up around them.

  26. The earthlings will awaken when things get so bad it will be too late. They just cannot be prised away from their imaginary treasures they are storing up here on earth.

  31. You never fail to touch that unconscious link between man and nature. I like the anaphora of "Like a tree..." The words really resonate.

  33. Sherry, sorry I have not been over sooner. Between Nina and Holy Week, it's been a seesaw. Thank you for your thoughts.

This poem, you as a tree, I SO get that. You have the heart of a tree, the resilience, and most of all, the strong connection to the earth. Your comment about earthlings as though they are "the other" speaks volumes about that connection. I so love your work. Amy
