As your icefields melt,
an ancient forest
is revealed,
voices from
another time.

Ice Forest by Abby Lowell, Juneau Empire

I googled the glacier, and discovered the retreating ice has bared the remains of an ancient forest, tree remains between one and two thousand years old, now being exposed to the air for the first time since  the advancing glacier swallowed them up. Wow.

The short poem above is all that came, after which I was speechless, so in awe I couldnt think of another word.

  3. Is this another result of global warming, I wonder, which leaves the ancient trees exposed?

  15. It is really cool whats the receding glacier are revealing. I worked near the Alaska Panhandle and every year the glacier you recede about a meter and show high grade gold and copper. That was in 1991 - since then i lost track but I'm sure someones been watching.

  17. And the brevity is perfect, Sherry...just absolutely perfect...voices from another time indeed as I believe that trees do have voices. This is wonderful, thank you so much for sharing and writing form your heart!

  18. What an excellent comment on the "global warming that isn't," according to some naive/heads in the sand people. Also, the stripping away of the ice to reveal the broken tree mirrors our broken values as the ice melts from our planet... BRILL. Amy

  19. Very cool-- i was in the Himalayas a few years ago and the glaciers have a black layer of soot on them. Terrible and speeds melting. Like your video the other day-- makes one feel sick as these places are -- As your poem points out-- so awe inspiring . K or manicddaily.
