for Toads

The mask I have to wear
to make it through the day
wears a smile
that covers disappointment,
loss, and
all the words I dare not say.

Soon I will fly over the mountain pass,
breathe deeply the energy
of being where I belong,
among my people,
where there is no need of masks.
Where masks are what doesnt fit.

belatedly, for  grapeling's mini-challenge at Toads: Masks

  1. To be where I belong ... my poetry is getting closer. Can poems come masked, or do they--like this one--escape from under the mask?

  13. why do we feel like we need to wear a mask? why can't we just feel what we feel and not pretend? this was lovely.

  14. in life we all have worn many masks depending on our age, context and with whom we're around, i.e. family, friends, alone, etc.
even when we' think we're being ourselves, the little that we know about ourselves, others see us the way they see us so in that regard we are wearing the mask they've dressed us in. We, humans, are chameleons we can adjust, acclamate

    Gracias, mi amiga

  18. Lovely writing, Sherry. I think of old age as being able to leave ones mask behind. Over the hill but not yet to The Happy Hunting Grounds.

I am in one of these places and have a foot in the other. No fair peeking. I hope you had old age and retirement, et al, in mind and not the other.

  19. I hope you can go, I hope you do go, but most of all I hope you find it to be the place where masks are unnecessary.

  20. I wonder what would happen if we all dropped our masks and stood face to face. What a different world this would be...but I fear this is for the next world, as we might not be able to bear the truth.
