Born of Stardust

Born of stardust,
when did we forget
that we are meant to fly?

When did we stop being artists,
and poets, and oboe players,
and dancers,
and an entire planetary orchestra?
When did we stop singing
the song that is our life
and turn it all to toil?

Did you ever have a dream?
Has it been set aside
because so many people "need" you?
Because work takes so many hours,
it leaves you lumpish on the couch
at day's end,
sad about the paintings
you always wanted to paint
and never will?

Kids,
listen up.
I just received a message.
While we keep putting off
bringing forth what it is
that we were born to do,
time sneaks up behind us
and steals Tomorrow.

Don't wait till the night watchman
calls out it will soon be morning.
Wake early.
Watch the sun come up.
Marvel.
Adore.
Then get busy painting!

  2. Thank you Sherry. I so much need to "paint". Time is getting short.

  3. Yes indeed, Sherry....if we keep putting off what we want to do time WILL indeed steal tomorrow. We MUST do what we WANT to do today.

  5. Yes, mi amiga. It is wise to share this wisdom but more importantly to partake in this 'stardust'.

  6. You are a master of motivation! Grab some paint, spread your wings and fly with color--time's a-wastin'! I love it!!

  8. Sherry - I try to save my "love its" for only a few special poems - this is one! I do love the poem and the message - so critical and so very authentic - you've painted the darkness of this early morning with the brilliance of color. Thank you :)

  10. the poem I should have read when I was a youngling. You know, when "I had all my life ahead of me". You know, when that meant forever.

Still, today there is no snow left outside, and it's Sunday. So off out I go into the beauty... thank you.

  11. Powerful words from deep within. Yes, we must do the things we love. I couldn't imagine me not writing.

  12. The older I get, and the less time I have to live, the more your poem makes sense to me. I will paint! (With words, of course.)

  13. The message is right, but unfortunately while we are working, time slips away. We look up, and we are older, but as we look at the work, we will know where we have been.

  19. So moved by this, such truth in your words. All artists owe it to themselves to nurture their creativity. So inspiring. Lovely!

  20. "Don't wait till the night watchman
calls out it will soon be morning." A good lesson for all of us to go forward with. Too often we let impediments get in the way of our creativity, love, and joyful life.

  22. I used to play the oboe! I used to do a lot of other things, too, which are more inspiring than the job I traded them for.

  23. Oh how this is speaking to me right now...I always let "life" get in the way of my "creativeness" must take the time to slow down just a bit Nice write

  26. When, indeed, Mary? It's taken me decades to accept the inevitable and acquiesce to the call to be a daily creator regardless of the world's response. I have never been more content. Never. This is what some of us are intended to do here, now.

  31. Sherry,

Your poem offers great encouragement, even to those of my age, who by now should have been in bed. I must have known that there was inspiration to be gained, by making one last visit for the evening!!!
    Best Wishes Sherry,
    Eileen:)

  32. Sherry, you just hit me over the head big time. Each day responsibilities steal my creativity, the only thing that truly matters, the only thing that brings me joy. To hell with dust, etc., its always there, let me paint instead. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  33. Sherry, not only is this meant to encourage youth, but it should be read and reread by EVERY parent. Then that parent should go to the Parent/Teacher meetings and advocate for arts in the schools, and budgetary fights must be fought. This poem is beautiful, but it also lit that well-known fire in my belly. Love, Amy

  34. I have this talk with myself every day...and every day I forget to follow through. Few poems "resonate" in a personal way with me, but, this one did.

  35. I needed this today, Sherry. You are pouring forth wisdom, and so I hope you heed it too--pull out that canvass and paint and write. You are already part of the orchestra.

  36. So do I...thank you Sherry. We need to fly! I can feel the burden and weight of 'the day' weighing me down lately.

Glad to see some returning to the Poets United.
