Sad Eyes

Is there anything
sadder
in the world,
than the eyes
of a
circus bear?

At Poetry Jam this week, the prompt is: Under the Big Top.

  1. I agree wholeheartedly with this Sherry. That's why I chose to write about Piccadilly Circus and not the live animal ones. As a kid I liked the circus but, as I grew up and realised that wild animals belong in their own habitats in the wild and not in cages travelling here, there and everywhere to amuse people, and the cruelty of it all, I stopped liking them. I still like a circus but, not with animals being degraded such as the one in your picture... how sad to abuse for our amusement, such a noble creature.

  4. Short and to the point. The beauty of a wild creature is that very wildness,

  7. Aww.....so true.

The circus dogs always seem to have a good time though.

  9. The brevity of image captured such centuries of sorrow at captivity of animals for our entertainment. Thank-you for this poem.

  12. At least he doesn't have to read haiku.

Seriously, I can't enjoy the circus anymore, cos it bothers me about the animals too much.

  13. Oh, I so agree, Sherry...we gave up on the circus years ago. I'm not fond of zoos either...animals don't belong in cages!

  14. Oh Sherry, you and I are together on this one--I could never stand to watch the animal acts. The horses, that was another story :-) but the tigers and elephants, made me want to cry.

  15. No, there is not. I actually have a novel I wrote which has a bear like this. There is not anything sadder, except perhaps a circus elephant - but they don't seem so overheated. k .

  20. The sadness is easily seen by those who look beyond the act, beyond the entertainment and into the heart of the matter.

  22. So true. And the sadness in that bear's eyes is matched by the eyes of the elephant forced to perform tricks by the prod of a sharp hook and the eyes of the caged tigers brought out to jump through flaming hoops. It's no wonder that some eventually say, "That's it; I've had enough," and turn on their trainers.
