Wolf Howls in My Dreams

[This wolf, who looks exactly like Pup,
except for the color of his eyes,
is from the site Howling For Justice]

On the
periphery
of sleep,
I'm sitting
at the edge
of the abyss,
contemplating
life and death,
and whether you
will
meet me
in Heaven.

Your wolf howls
have been
echoing through
my dreams.
Shadow-Wolves
have been
slipping
in and out
of my dark nights,
as elusive
as
shape-shifters
in the
primordial forest.

I fall
over the edge,
and now
I'm dreaming:
and there you are,
tail aloft,
eyes
alight with joy
and gleaming,
your paws
galloping,
galloping
towards me,
my black wolf,
galloping
to meet me.

  2. Oh, surely you knew he never left you, didn't you? Yep, thought so.

  3. He had to come, you had prepared that place in your heart meant just for him. There is such joy in this piece of writing Sherry. It lifts the heart and soul,

  4. This, despite it's tinge of melancholy, made me smile. You'll see him again, I have no doubt of that at all.

  5. Every word of this post touched me, Sherry! In your heart, Pup is as much alive as Angel is in mine. I know with certainty that we'll get to gather their furry bodies into our arms again. That's when we'll know there is, indeed, a heaven...:)

  6. Pup was one lucky pup. Still is, alive in your stories and poems and thoughts and dreams. Saroyan said (paraphrasing here) that we live on in the stories folks tell about us. So Pup will most likely be immortal!

This reminded me of the Rainbow Bridge, not sure if you're familiar with the story. For those who beieve in a hereafter, it's said that our animals, all beloved, wait together and frolic in the pastures until the day we (their loved one) come across and meet them. It's a sweet story, whether you believe it or not, so I thought I'd pass it along... love, Amy

  7. I love that first stanza - how we contemplate so much on that verge of sleep - the semi-state of conscious can be so revealing - brilliant poem - wonderful flow throughout - nice!

  8. Pup is with you, Sherry. Always will be. Know that you were soulmates, ARE soulmates still.
