You Are........

You are
the blackbird of my heart,
I carried with me
when i walked away,
because you could not
say the words
to make me stay.

You perch within,
as always caught
between the earth
and sky.

You thought I sought
to hold you.
I sigh. I sigh.
Brother Dreamer,
I always wanted you
to fly.

For Marian's prompt at Real Toads: Eres tu (you are), and sharing it with the fine folk at Poets United, where there is good reading every Sunday morning.

I am working on my tablet, not good at linking.

  2. That's tough, Sherry, wanting him/them to fly. I'd always want him/her to stay (but wouldn't tell that unless I felt it was reciprocal).
When I fly, I love it, I'm always behaved and qualified to come back at night. And not very often fly, almost never. I used to spend an occasional day or afternoon riding my bike up and down the Rio Grand, both sides.

    1. Jim, i didnt want him to fly away. He feared being held down by love while, to me, love is wanting the other to be all they can be....to soar.

  7. Really like this Sherry. Most of us know, and love someone who thinks that love is only a trap.

  8. That first stanza is amazing, wrings the heart but I applaud your strength. The blackbird of my heart - I love. The whole poem is great ...

  9. This is sad, Sherry, but I understand the sentiment. Very touching.

  11. Such a beautiful metaphor, Sherry: 'You are the blackbird of my heart'! I also love the lines:
    'You perch within,
    as always caught
    between the earth
    and sky'.

  13. What is sad is that there are so many love stories untold. I think it is good to delve back and find a poem there in your heart that can come out. I loved it.

  14. Real love never wants to ground the other. It does, as you say here, revel in watching the solo flights of their beloved as well as enjoying the flights together.

love is to let go at times.

  17. I think love needs to be UN-tethered
for it allows one to truly soar. Your words have captured the essence of this gift so wonderfully.

  18. Real love demands some compromise and sacrifice. Unfashionable and non progressive view but it's true.

  19. Deeply intriguing. I especially like 'the blackbird of my heart' because the words weren't spoken ...and I always wanted you to fly.

  20. Oh so touching as it is always sad when we are not in sync understanding how we feel and what we want for the other person....a fabulous poem that opened with a memorable line!

  21. You are soaring now... well maybe walking slowly but still with purpose : )

  22. What a lovely poem. Made me think of a lover, children, a pet - how we (I) would love to hold on, not let go. I want to own the sentiment in the poem - fly, go, be. But sadly, that's something I'm still working on.

  23. This is stunning. I feel that it articulates, so eloquently, the repercussions of 'holding back' (of commitment ... trust ... communication ...) in a relationship.

I think the piece would resonate with so many - particularly with the partner that was 'all in'.

I have seen this relationship paradigm (and the sadness of it) again and again. You've put it to paper, so brilliantly here, Sherry.

  26. Sherry. I have something caught in my throat, in my heart. This is so perfectly perfect.
    "I sigh. I sigh."
    Sigh!
