MOTHER SKY / SMALL BIRD

Expansive Mother Sky,
in all your greys and blues,
your hazy autumn hues,
you hold my heart
the way the rugged maple
holds the twiggy nest
in which sits a wee brown bird,
serene, and softly singing.

***

Small bird,
with your sweetness
you are
the bodhisattva
of my morning.
Songstress,
you awaken me
to the plight of all beings.

***

You,
who own only feathers,
are far happier
than we.
Teach us your song.

  1. What a beautiful sentiment, Sherry. If only we would al have the happiness birds have in their uncomplicated lives.

  2. Your words are always magic, Sherry. We've no doubt much to learn from the small brown bird!

  3. Perhaps the bird finds more freedom than us because it does not have nearly as many entanglements. Maybe is we flowed free as the river, over stones and such.

  4. You, who own only feathers
    are far happier than we.

The feathers are the magical privilege. They are just as happy though handicapped in other ways

  6. This is so beautiful Sherry. We have so much to learn haven't we? This world is slowly being destroyed by greed...but it will get quicker!

  11. Owning only feathers is called, I think, living lightly. May we all learn how to live that way. After all, we came into the world with nothing, and we will leave the world with nothing.

  15. And what lovely messages to find in here this morning. Thank you, my friends. The small brown bird is on my porch right now, eating seeds. Oh, along with a mourning dove and some very bossy jays!!!!! They have learned to share, thankfully.

  16. stunning - and what an image -

    the way the rugged maple
    holds the twiggy nest -

in the simple cycle of things, we are reminded, that the rugged, the "ugly" holds life, precious life, too - and that the "simple" bird, goes on living its way, as it must and can only do -

a mindful prayer you have noted here Sherry - thank you for noticing, and sharing

  17. How much happier would we be if we valued the things we need, instead of worrying so much about the things we just want? Smart bird.

  21. I think you are right about the happiness of birds. If only humans could be guided by an impetus of such simplicity ... Sadly self interest (of someone or other) seems to steer us all onto the rocks, again and again. A lovely little piece, Sherry.

  22. "teach us the song" so we can be in harmony. Today, I was driving an a red cardinal flew in front of my car. I haven't seen one in a while it lifted my spirit to watch him flutter by.
