The Music of the Spheres

My beloved Wickaninnish Beach

I open my window to the music of the spheres:
call of mourning dove, hoot of owl,
fresh new leaves rustling on green willow,
creek trickling over rocks, singing a morning song.

I open my door to the beauty near at hand.
The mountains teach patience.
The river teaches joy.
Trees are the wisdom-keepers.
The ocean sings a song of life
that echoes in our hearts.

I open my soul to the expansiveness of the sky,
the deep mystery of the heavens,
moon and stars and clouds and  swirling planets,
each in its perfect place.
As we are, no matter what we face.

It is all here ~
everything we need, for wonder ~
our souls rise up in response,
like candles, catching the flame and flaring,
like hearts, catching the light and sharing,
warm, like the sun coming out,
after a long winter.

for Susan's prompt at Mid Week Motif: enlightenment. For me, the soul's journey is deeply entwined with the beauty of the natural world.

  1. And I, for one, couldn't agree more, my cackling wise friend. I find an echo of my own joy in your words and images. This was just what I needed today.

  4. Open window, door, soul--"As we are, no matter what we face." Imlove the singers, teachers and expansiveness, lighting like candles, on fire like hearts and vast as spring and summer. This is my new favorite of your poems.

  5. I can imagine no greater teachers than those in nature. They expand our souls and allow the light. This poem is a prayer to them, to yourself and us all. It is pure beauty. Thank you Sherry.

  7. Sherry, how beautiful. You could also link as Music to ABC Wednesday, where we are at the letter M! Yes, there is music of the soul to be found in nature. We need to listen whenever we can, but some folks seem to be tonedeaf as they plunder our natural resources... Love, Amy

  8. Sherry,

Enlightenment is all about this wonderful world. Learning should come easy to humankind, via nature, animals and the example of the wise forefathers..It is as you have written in your magnificent poem Sherry. Sadly a lot of this wisdom goes unused, through the impatience and ignorance of mankind...Animals and nature can teach us so much...Enlightenment is in so many of your poems Sherry...
    Happy Springtime,
    Eileen

  10. Sadly it is mankind that is out of kilter with the world. We take more than we need, we destroy that which is of no use to us but worse still we have no respect for the other inhabitants of this earth. Even our tears cannot generate wisdom.

  11. Is this what you see from your actual window or when you are in Tofino? Another poetical expression of your link and relationship with Nature.

  13. We humans do learn from nature and animals! Sadly many refuse instead many think first of themselves. Truly said Sherry!

  16. Love the balance and the light and the warmth... The fact that everything has its place, even if it isn't all that stable at the moment; for eventually, it will be. ♥
